Enthusiasm, passion and spunk; they have got it all.
Expect to be entertained by the energetic Temasek Junior College (TJC) cheerleading team as they bring the 1st Asian Youth Games (AYG) Singapore 2009 to their own school during the AYG torchbearer run.
Clad in blue plait skirts or pants (for the boys, of course) and equipped with sparkling electric blue pom poms, the TJC cheerleading team is set to put on an amazing performance.
This spontaneous group of 16, led by Captain Chua Shiyan, has been practising hard since early March. Although most members are new to the sport, it will not stop the team from awing the crowd with impressive stunts such as the three-tiered Eiffel Tower.
"We like to constantly challenge ourselves with new stunts," says Genevieve Hoffner, a cheer member and a flyer during stunts. "We usually adopt such stunts from (watching) videos or even movies!"
Their routine also consists of high-energy dance moves and catchy cheers. Also, do not be surprised when you spot Bollywood dance moves during their performance. As TJC is hosting the Indian NOC for the AYG, the team decided to incorporate such moves into their routine to express their support as well as to showcase their uniqueness.
However, the glitz and glamour of their performance is not without blood, sweat and tears. The trainings, held twice a week and lasting 6 to 7 hours per session, are extremely draining, both physically and emotionally.
Injuries too are aplenty; there have been incidents of bad falls and sprains. However, these are just part and parcel of cheerleading, said Chin Yug Han, one of the bases during stunts.
"There is always a risk involved in every stunt," he explained, but he also assured us that the team pays exceptional attention to the safety of their members.
The TJC cheerleading team has performed for numerous events, but the upcoming showcase for the AYG open house will be their last performance together and they hope to do their very best and leave a lasting impression.
The AYG mean a lot to these students and they are extremely honoured to be given an opportunity to be a part of it.
"I am certain my team will train twice as hard for this event as we want to give this our best shot and do our school and country proud!" says Shiyan, the captain of the TJC cheerleading team.
The team will be performing at their very own TJC during the AYG opening ceremony torchbearer run. So do go down and give this dedicated group your utmost support!
